Wace at Lunchtime

Join Jersey Heritage and listen to our Jèrriais Language Officer, Geraint Jennings as he reads aloud in Jèrriais from the 12th-century works of Wace, as part of our MILLENIUM – 2027 European Year of the Normans Programme.

Discover the rich linguistic heritage of Jersey through Jèrriais, the island’s native language and a variety of Norman. Hearing Jèrriais spoken offers a fascinating glimpse into the language of William the Conqueror’s era, connecting us to the Norman world of 1066 and the Battle of Hastings.

Explore the legacy of Wace, a celebrated Norman poet and Canon of Bayeux, born in Jersey around 1110. Renowned for his evocative epic verse, Wace brought history and legend vividly to life, immortalising the events surrounding the Battle of Hastings and weaving tales of the legendary King Arthur. His enduring works offer a captivating link between Jersey’s heritage, medieval literature and the stories that have shaped our understanding of the past.
